The regulations for Formula Junior allowed the use of a production-derived power unit up to 1100cc in capacity, the majority of constructors were Italian, most of whom used the Fiat 1100 engine. However, British race car constructor Elva, also entered the fray, experimenting with their first single seater. The car followed normal practice for the time, with a tubular frame housing a front mounted engine and clothed in a fibreglass open-wheeled body, the whole design sharing many features with the firm’s Mk V sports car.
Most Elvas had BMC engines although whichever unit was adopted it was always mounted as far back in the chassis as possible. Among many successes was the 1960 American Formula Junior Championship, drive
