Description

"EJS stands for Edwin Joseph Snusher, the automobile engineer who created this curvaceous competition classic. From 1954 he spent two years designing and developing the car to compete against Lotus, Cooper, Elva and Tojeiro – and he did it all from scratch. The running gear is also completely original, with a very specific front suspension. Clever and efficient, it is adjustable and includes an upper semi-elliptical spring combined with a lower helical spring working in tension, the whole being studied to present a constant camber and flush. Snusher opted for a De Dion axle, but with two parallel tubes instead of one usually. Braking was via rear inboard drums and conventional drums on the front. The engine and gearbox were then sold, and the car didn’t move for some 45 years. Presenting as a fascinating project the car was acquired by Sherwood Restorations, they fitted a new Coventry Climax 1100 engine-correct for the period-which was mated to an Aston Martin gearbox. The superb condition of this unique race car is supported by the fact it is FIA homologated for period E in the HS4 class and is therefore eligible for several historic events including Goodwood Revival. Featured in the September 1956 edition of Autocar the article concluded ’The car is a milestone in design and construction’.Accompanied by a superb history folder showing the construction of the car together with a historical technical passport FIA, issued by the Motor Sport Association. Currently registered in Belgium this EJS still displays the registration number of PRK 750 which was the original registration index issued by the DVLA. This number appears not to have been re-issued and any new owner may well be able to obtain it through the normal channels. This is a rare opportunity to own a unique car with a very interesting history. Black & white photographs courtesy of Julius Thurgood founder of the HRDC
