It created quite a stir when Dodge launched the Dodge Viper. The papers stood full of it and car magazines simply could not get enough of writing about it either. Americans formed an orderly queue to order the car. Although Europeans were less enthusiastic the car was very well received there too. The (1991-1995) first generation car only came as a Targa. In 1996 the second generation hit the market as the one we have here; the Dodge Viper GTS coupé. The most striking feature of the Viper GTS is the Double Bubble roof. The reason for the Double Bubble was to provide space for the driver and co-driver to wear helmets on the race track. The Viper is fitted with a huge 7.990cc V10 putting out 450 Ps with this generation of cars. Up to 1999 the Dodge Viper came with forged pistons that were very suitable for the engine to be supercharged. That was exactly what happened to this car, after finding the 450 Ps to paltry he fitted a supercharger. Naturally the rest of the car was suitably modified to be able to cope with all this extra power. The bodywork is a story in itself. The car still has its factory coat of paint. Initially the car was supplied by a German Chrysler dealership to a proper Viper enthusiast. He only used his pride and joy with good weather on high days. The next owner, a Swede, was no less a devotee and spectacularly elevated the car to its current state. The fully original bodywork is correctly aligned. The shut-lines a stunning. The high quality forged rims are shod in Toyo Semislicks. On closer inspection of the rims we see the Big Brake Brembo kit behind. The car is stunning and original in its presentation. The interior has been augmented with a number of function essentials to facilitate keeping a close eye on that extra power. The centre consul has a gearstick to engage the sequential transmission as well as extra gauges that for instance keep a check on the E85 fuel tank. There are gauges that indicate which gear you are in, tell when you need to shift gear, the amount of engine boost and every temperature, a plethora of information. The previous owner had the car set up to for long journeys as well as track days. He kept the standard seats as they fulfilled both purposes with ease. Completing the drivers workspace we find a sporty three spoke, alcantara clad steering wheel in preference to the standard issue one. This workspace has to be handled with due respect considering the car’s serious power. The engine was totally rebuilt using a special Comp camshaft, special low-compression pistons, a Roe supercharger and carbon manifold. The engine was then attached to a Sellholm sequential gearbox and given different suspension, not forgetting the Brembo Big Brake set.
Lets be clear, this is not a car for the novice. The Viper is known to strike when least expected and this one is even more vicious. The previous owner however tuned the car to such a degree that its power is deployed evenly, the wheel alignment quite neutral allowing as broad as possible margin before the car reaches its limits. Mechanically the perfectly maintained car is in the rudest of health. The engine is tuned to use E85 petrol and it will come as no surprise the Viper is a thirsty beast when you push for power. The car comes with its original car wallet. This my friends is an exceptionally serious Dodge Viper. Transformed to the highest standard, offering anyone who can judge the car on its merits and spending the time needed, many challenging years ahead.
