A fascinating and highly individual sports car of the 1960s
The name Devin represents a particularly fascinating chapter in American sports car history. From the 1950s onwards, Bill Devin offered lightweight fibreglass bodies that could be combined with a wide variety of chassis and engines. This allowed ambitious enthusiasts to create sports cars of their own, often using whatever mechanical components were readily available or seemed particularly promising.
This 1964 Devin takes that philosophy to a decidedly unusual extreme. Beneath its American sports car bodywork lies DKW mechanicals. To the best of current knowledge, it may even be the only Devin ever fitted with DKW running gear – a combination of American fibreglass bodywork and German engineering that stands out even in the remarkably varied world of Devin sports cars.
The Devin has undergone a complete restoration and was comprehensively refurbished throughout. Particular attention was also paid to the accompanying hardtop, which was likewise fully restored and remains with the car today.
It is precisely this unusual technical combination that gives this Devin its particular appeal. While Devin bodies were fitted to a remarkable variety of chassis and engines, the marriage with DKW mechanicals appears to have remained an exceptional case.
This Devin is therefore not merely a charming little sports car, but also a fascinating reminder of an era when individuality in sports car construction could still be taken quite literally.
