The Auto Union 1000SP Coupé was often seen in its day as a diminutive version of the Ford Thunderbird, which is not surprising when put side by side. The DKW 1000SP Coupé sold 5,004 times and whilst the Roadster only managed 1,640. Despite its modest size Auto Union sold the 1000S as a true luxury product, a marketing model its successor Audi still adheres to. The Auto Union 1000SP was also the last Auto Union model to feature a 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine. All further models were fitted with 4-stroke engines.

This particular car was sold to a German who was on the verge of emigrating to Cape Town where he intended to start a garage. The garage turn out to be a success and later became an official Audi dealership. The car stood in a showroom for over 20 years. In 1985 the owner’s son decided to blow life into the car and revived its mechanics. Nothing else was required and the car was then purely used for pleasure. In 2020 the car found its way back to Germany. The bodywork has been thinly resprayed for pure cosmetic reasons in her original colour, but is otherwise completely original. The nice and thin panelwork is correctly aligned. The high quality respray has retained its lustre. The chrome bumpers shine like new after recently being fully re-chromed. Besides that four new correctly sized tyres have been fitted.

The interior has remained totally untouched and has developed a fine patina. Thanks to the considerable length of time the car was kept in a warm and dry garage, the bakelite steering wheel and gearstick knob has stayed in fine condition. The upholstery is fully original and has that irreplaceable

patina. The boot lining and rubber carpets are new. Furthermore an original five knob Becker radio takes place of pride.

This car has always lived an easy life and as a result the 2-stroke engine still runs perfectly. As you have every right to suspect, the car was exclusively maintained with original parts when in South Africa. Last year the car was thoroughly serviced in Germany. This DKW is mechanically in peak condition and ready to use. The brakes respond well and the suspension is still very well adept at its job.

The car comes complete with recent invoices detailing the specialist work carried out in Germany. This, in every aspect remarkable, DKW 1000SP Coupé is ready for you to experience 2-stroke touring at its best!
