Description

De Tomaso Guarà Coupé blue
Why choose to drive a car when you can have art on wheels? Because that’s what this extremely beautiful and rare 1995 De Tomaso Guarà Coupé exactly is! Only 18 (!) of the BMW V8-powered Coupé version were built. This is one of them.

History
The Guarà is the last De Tomaso project where founder Alejandro de Tomaso was personally involved in. The Italian built sportscar was introduced back in 1993 in Geneva and officially remained on the market until 2006. However, the last Guarà already left the factory in Modena in 2004. The Guarà was based on the 1991 Maserati Barchetta Stradale prototype. But in contrast to the Guarà, the Maserati was meant as a genuine racing car instead of a road-going sportscar.

Logically the Coupé wasn’t the only version of the Guarà. Just like the Maserati, De Tomaso presented a Barchetta body style without a roof or a proper windscreen. There was also a Spider version though including a normal windscreen and soft-top – only 5 of them were built. It’s obvious that the Coupé was the most popular Guarà with about 50 sold cars worldwide. Most of them had a Ford engine. But not this one…

Design
It’s hard not to fall in love with the stunning Guarà design. Somehow De Tomaso managed to create something extremely progressive and timeless at the same time. The profile of the bodywork looks very sharp, but it contains many elegant details as well. We discover a small touch Alfa Romeo SZ here and there, personally liking the Guarà proportions better. For instance, those broad shoulders, fairly upright A-pillar and gently sloping rear window ending in a prominent back spoiler, are matching Alfa’s legendary Sprint Zagato design.

Also characterizing for the Guarà are the smooth curves on the front with pop-up headlights and squeezed city lights in the bumper. At the back you’ll find louvred taillights like the Ferrari Testarossa or 348, but smaller and finished in the same beautiful color as the rest of the bodywork. We mentioned the rear spoiler earlier. Or should we call it a plateau? It truly is that flat and big!

Interior & technique
Putting the interior and technique in the same category isn’t really our style. However, since this specific De Tomaso Guarà Coupé is equipped with the interior parts and engine of BMW, it couldn’t hurt to make an exception. After all, this is an exceptional ride…

The blue full leather upholstery is completely intact and looks gorgeous, especially in combination with the dark blue exterior color.
The instruments behind the 3-spoke Momo sports steering wheel are 100% BMW. The leather dashboard and extremely broad center console 100% De Tomaso. Underneath lies a 6-speed manual gearbox linked to a 4.0 liter BMW-V8 engine (M60 B40) producing 272 hp. The suspension is inspired by the Formula 1 and IndyCar with an independent upper and lower wishbone including pushrod setup giving it the beautiful agile handling where the Guarà is known for.
