The catalog of the Clément range for 1902 described the Type B in these terms: "This car is the small version of our light cars, of graceful appearance, it can render the greatest services to people who do not want to exceed a certain purchase price”. With its water- pump-cooled Clément single- cylinder engine, 2-speed gimbal transmission and Dunlop clincher tires, this car nevertheless featured modern solutions for the time.
The example on offer is exceptional: it was bought new in 1902 by a priest of Eure et Loire, and it then remained in the family until 1966, when it was bought by Doctor Ferrand, a famous collector from Sarthe. The car was exhibited for a long time in the Sarthe Automobile Museum, before becoming, in 1982, the property of another collector from the same region, who kept it until 2000. The latter participated in the Tour du Léman, as well as the 1966 London-Brighton run. In the same family since 2003, this veteran has benefited from a comprehensive high- quality restoration, retaining the many fine details specific to well-preserved cars. The original carburetor has been retained, although advantageously replaced by an easier to adjust Longuemare. For greater safety, a hand brake has been adapted. We were able to notice with much pleasure, that the single cylinder started literally with a quarter turn. This superb Clément is ready to take part in the most selective of veteran rallies.
The auction of this lot will take place on Friday 18 March 2022.
