This desirable Citroën SM has a clear and particularly interesting history. It was delivered new to its first owner on 29 October 1971 and has only had three further owners: the second from 1973–1990, the third until 2006, and then its fourth and current owner, who bought it nearly 16 years ago. An original French car, it has never left the Gironde department, as can be seen from its registration from the period. Finished in the magnificent colour of ‘Brun Scarabée’, it has the optional tan leather, tinted glass and air-conditioning (in working order). Its original engine, which was removed from the car for a time, was modified by Georges Regembeau, who was renowned for his work to optimise the performance of Citroën’s cars from the 1960s onwards. During the 1990s, the engine was completely rebuilt – a job requiring more than 250 hours’ work – before being reinstalled in the car. It still sports its Regembeau cylinder heads, which were rebuilt in 2007, and can now use unleaded fuel. More recently, in 2017, the bodywork was completely restored, and the SM is now in excellent condition and looks great. The superb leather interior remains original and is delightfully patinated; we noted that the headlining has been restored and that a period Grundig radio is fitted.
The car comes with a maintenance file including bills and photographs; it has a stainless steel exhaust and electronic ignition. With its history and uprated engine, this SM is certainly one of the rarest and most sought-after examples on the market.
