- Rare hydraulic transmission
- USA Export specification

From the moment the DS was introduced at the Paris Motor Show in October 1955, Citroën took a close interest in the worldwide export market. Offering an unusual and modern car, the manufacturer turned up at the Chicago Auto Show in January 1956 with a green DS, which was enthusiastically received by the press, leading to successful sales. The Citroën Cars Corporation dealer network gradually developed, importing cars adapted to the specific requirements of the American market.
Several versions of the DS were offered, including the convertible – mainly sold on the West Coast – and the estate, the model we are concerned with here.
The estate, based on the ID 19, was introduced for the 1960 model year and proved a great success in the US, where its elegance and versatility were much appreciated. Known as the ‘Station Wagon’, the famous dual rear number plates fitted in France were replaced by a specific angled license plate holder which could be tipped up or down.

The model we are presenting for sale is one of the rare DS 21 estates fitted with hydraulic transmission destined for the American market and which has all the equipment specific to export models, making it a sought-after addition to any collection today. It is a 1972 model with the 21 engine, fitted with the additional folding seats in the luggage compartment so beloved of large families! Finished in white with a red cloth interior in good condition, the car was partly restored in Montreal a few years ago. It was then bought by a French enthusiast living as an expat in Canada who brought it back when he returned to France in August 2017. Since the current owner bought the car, he regularly drove the car but needs to sell it now to make room as he said. To make the car more reliable for long trips, he spent almost 10 000 € to refurbish the mechanic, the hydraulic and electric systems. It just the car you need to take your family down to the seaside this summer!
