Description

In 1955, the Citroën DS replaced the Traction Avant series, whose exterior design had remained virtually unchanged for 23 years. Citroën retained the powertrain layout featuring front-wheel drive, with the engine mounted longitudinally at the rear and the gearbox positioned in front of the front axle. The design and chassis technology of the new car represented major advances not only compared with its predecessors but also compared with contemporary rival models. The engine was carried over from the Traction Avant with minor modifications. As with the previous model, the engineer André Lefèbvre and the designer Flaminio Bertoni played leading roles in the development of this model. In October 1956, the second model year (1957) was unveiled. Alongside the DS19, a stripped-down version of the four-door saloon was now also introduced as the ID19, paving the way for the imminent discontinuation of the predecessor ‘Traction’ series. Although the ID featured hydraulic suspension from the outset – alongside a simpler engine producing 66 hp rather than the DS’s 75 hp – its gearbox was conventional. In 1964, power output rose to 81 hp and the vehicles were fitted with the new, less problematic LHS2 hydraulic fluid. The Citroën ID 19 on offer here was first registered in Denmark on 18 July 1966. According to the seller, they purchased the car from a second owner in 2021 and imported it into Switzerland. As part of the preparations for the upcoming import MOT, the engine and gearbox were overhauled in 2022, the suspension was fitted with new springs and new dust boots, and the brakes were replaced. Since the work was completed in December 2023, this timeless French classic has covered just under 400 km. The ID is currently in very good technical condition; according to the previous owner, the bodywork is in its original condition, and the black leather interior also appears to be original, showing signs of wear appropriate to its age. The last veteran MOT took place in December 2023.
