Description
- One of only 165 examples of the DS 21 Décapotable bodied by Chapron for the 1966 model year
- Presented in the original colour scheme of Royal Blue over natural hide
- An early DS 21 combining the 109 horsepower 2,175 cc engine and open-headlamp nose
When Citroën unveiled the DS in 1955, the car was so futuristic—both in appearance and in what lay beneath the skin—onlookers were stunned. A technological tour de force that resembled nothing else, the DS was unique. And with the coachbuilt French marques of the pre-war era in their death throes, the model would provide a canvas for carrossier, Henri Chapron.
After his DS cabriolet caused a sensation in 1958, Chapron was approached by Citroën to create a production version. The ensuing “cabriolet de série” would be converted by Chapron in Levallois-Perret and sold by Citroën dealers. The first was built in October 1960.
The vehicle offered, chassis 4350064, was delivered to the coachbuilder on 11 October 1965, receiving order number 8910. The completed car was subsequently registered in France on 23 December, after being delivered new to Bordeaux. Finished in Royal Blue with “naturel” hide, the DS is offered in restored condition and, benefitting from a full service in October 2020 and an additional service carried out in November 2022, is ready to be enjoyed. Being from the 1966 model year, the car benefits from the 2,175-cc engine, yet retains the characteristic open headlamps of the early variant and is also equipped with the optional Jaeger dashboard. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/pa23.
