At the end of the 80s, the Chrysler Group, which had been in great difficulty at the beginning of the decade, began to recover thanks to the effects of the merger with AMC and the commercial success of the ‘Voyager’. In search of a new image, the brand decided, through Bob Lutz, to create a genuine sports car, the AC Cobra, to serve as a benchmark.
At the end of 1989, the first concept car was presented for public testing. The response was so positive that the project was launched in collaboration with Caroll Shelby, then a partner in the Chrysler Group.
For the engine, the choice was made for a V10 (then the reference engine in F1), to power the first American ‘Supercar’. The design was entrusted to engineers from Lamborghini, then part of Chrysler. They developed an 8000cc engine with 394bhp.
At the end of 1991, the Viper was finally ready, and was launched with great fanfare at the 1992 Detroit Motor Show. It was so successful that in 1996, Dodge launched a coupé version of its Viper, called the GTS. For the occasion, the engine was upgraded to 450 bhp. Airbags and air conditioning were also introduced.
Based on the GTS, Chrysler, with the help of Oreca, launched the VIPER GTS R, which won 4 Le Mans races in its class. These victories helped to promote the car in Europe, where it was sold under the Chrysler brand.
The car on offer is a Chrysler Viper GTS, sold new in Madrid on 05 May 1999. It remained in Spain until 2004, when it was imported into France, in the Drôme region. Its current owner, an enthusiast from the south of France, bought it in 2006. Since then, he has regularly serviced the car. The worn clutch needs replacing. The bodywork is clean, but the only drawback is the opaque headlights.
