V8 Hemi engine

Since the mid 1920's and the launch of its brand by Walter Chrysler, the Imperial has been the top of the range of the American car manufacturer. It was a finishing touch until 1955, when the group's management decided to make it a full-fledged brand to market its finest automobiles and compete with Cadillac at General Motors and Lincoln at Ford. It was also the time when the iconic Virgil Exner worked for Cadillac and created the Forward Look. In Imperial's first year as a brand, the range consisted of two models: the short-wheelbase C69, available as a sedan and Newport coupe, and the long-wheelbase C70, only available as a Crown sedan. Under the bonnet was Chrysler's best engine, the 331-hp Fire Power V8 with its hemispherical cylinder head and four-barrel carburetor that provided 250 hp, mated to the smooth Power Flite automatic transmission and its dashboard-mounted controls.

The coupé we present here, known as the factory two-door hardtop, was one of the 3,418s that rolled off the production line in 1955. At the time, it was the most expensive American coupe on the market! It also had some particularly interesting options for the time, including front seats and electric windows (all the electric equipment worked except for one front window). It is therefore a rare model, especially on this side of the Atlantic. It was imported to France in 1991, and restored to US standards. All the mechanics were rebuilt in the late 1990s, and the body was restored in 2000, along with the upholstery and the chrome. It is said that the rear quarter medallions are even gold-plated... This Imperial, which has benefited from a very high quality restoration but has not been driven much in recent years, is just waiting to be driven after a small revision.

This car will be sold by auction by AGUTTES Auction House, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, on June the 20th, 2021.
