Designed from the ground up and launched in 1967, the Chevrolet Camaro was General Motors’ answer the hugely successful Ford Mustang. Offered in both coupé and convertible guise, the stunning Bill Mitchell and Henry Haga-penned muscle car featured flowing Coke-bottle styling that echoed the Corvette. A range of powerful V-8 engines ensured the new car was as fast on the road as it appeared standing still.

For 1969, Chevrolet updated the exterior design of the Camaro, making it appear to be longer, lower, and wider. Meanwhile, the RS (or “Rally Sport”) cosmetic package provided distinctive “hideaway” headlights, while the SS (or “Super Sport”) package offered a louvered bonnet, upgraded suspension, different gearbox options, and servo-assisted disc brakes. Engines ranged from a workaday straight-six to 350 cubic-inch (5.7 litre) “Turbo-Fire” V-8 that became standard equipment for SS models, with the ultimate in performance provided by the desirable 396 cubic-inch (6.5 litre) L-78 big block V-8.

This 1969 Camaro Convertible left the Norwood, Ohio factory on 30 April, destined for the Bill Jacobs Chevrolet dealership of Joliet, Illinois, according to the National Corvette Restorers Society. Finished today in Garnett Red over a black vinyl interior and matching soft-top, it boasts the desirable L-48 300 horsepower “Turbo-Fire” engine and a four-speed manual transmission with Hurst short throw shifter. The car is also equipped with servo-assisted brakes, power steering, centre console with instrumentation, and a Delco AM-FM push-button radio. It rides on modern, aftermarket wheels with low profile tyres. The consignor acquired this 1969 Chevrolet Camaro in April 2011, whereupon it was imported to Switzerland and joined The Carrera Collection.

Attractively finished and fitted with the desirable L-48 powerplant, this Chevrolet Camaro is an iconic machine from the golden era of the muscle car—a time just before increasing regulation and rising insurance costs led to a watering down of performance. As such, this Camaro would make a fine addition to any collection of Detroit Iron, or an equally enjoyable tool for cruises and events.
