Introduced in 1950 as the name for Chevrolet two-door hardtops, the Bel Air would become a premium trim level for numerous body styles starting in 1953. For the 1955 model year, Chevrolet would completely redesign its full-size model, creating a true American icon. Utilizing taut lines and a Ferrari-inspired grille, the 1955 Bel Air would bring the first production application of the legendary “small-block” V-8 engine. Offered as an option, the 265 cid V-8 was rated at 162 hp and propelled the Bel Air to 60 mph in 12.9 seconds, according to period road testing by Car and Driver magazine. Known as the “Tri-Five” generation of Chevrolets, the 1955–1957 Bel Airs remain as popular today as they were when new.

This stunning 1955 Bel Air Convertible is a tremendous expression of the many charms of the model. While its early history is not known, in 2006, the Chevrolet was purchased by noted collector Stephen Plaster, and it became part of his massive collection. Purchased by the consignor in 2011, the Bel Air was then given a comprehensive restoration by Bill Potts, who did the mechanicals, and Custom Classics, who restored the body in stunning Gypsy Red with a contrasting tail. Since restoration, this amazing example of Americana has seen fastidious care as part of the consignor’s world-class collection. It stands ready to supply a new owner with the miles of smiles that can only be provided by an American convertible.
