The battle for supremacy in the luxury car market in America was waged for many years, mainly between Cadillac and Packard, with the occasional offerings from Lincoln, Chrysler, Marmon, Duesenberg and others not reaching anywhere near the same production volume, indeed, most of them failed to survive the depression of the 1930s. After World War Two the fortunes of Packard were on the wane and Cadillac for a while had things very much its own way with the Series 60 cars: these were based on a pre-war design, using a 5.6 litre side-valve V8 engine. However, the appearance of the Packard Clipper in 1946 threatened Cadillac sales, and it was clear that the car would have to be up-dated.
