This is some ship, huh? The 1956 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible is, quite rightly, what they used to call a “Landyatch”. With its imposing 5.64 metres in length, it is in any money a huge car. In 1956 it was the summit of automotive prowess. A car to tour around in all comfortable with the whole family in tow. If you drove up in a Cadillac Series 62, the neighbours did not have to ask if you had made it. With a Cadillac Series 62 Convertible everyone simply knew you had arrived. Not only was its length impressive its width was too. The front bench easily has enough space for three as does the rear bench. This example has undergone a full body-off restoration in the recent past and is in stunning condition.

The car’s bodywork looks marvellous. The panelwork all aligns and the paintwork is in excellent condition. The car received a two-tone paint job which still has peach perfect lustre. There are only minimal signs of use to be detected. The enormous chrome bumpers are too in very good shape as they beautifully follow the body contours. These bumpers form an integral part of the car. In front, they not only protect but also provide space for the fog lights. At the rear, the exhausts are beautifully integrated in the rear bumper. During the restoration, the hood was replaced and fits like a glove.

The interior is for American car enthusiasts the absolute summit. The dashboard is spectacularly broad and very orderly. Even the clock is huge! The rest of the gauges and controls are in great shape and in similar working order. The gauges are as clear as day and a feast to behold. The interior trim was reupholstered during the restoration and looks great. The seating leather has been expertly applied and provides for a wonderful seating form. The carpets too were expertly fitted and looked splendid. The car has, as may be expected to form a top of the range model, a tonneau cover that neatly covers the hood.

The car has a beauty of an eight-cylinder. The 365 Cubic Inches V8 engine producing 285 Ps is attached to an automatic transmission with, for then unimaginable amount of gears, namely four. The car is equipped with the most comfortable of suspensions and proudly stands on huge White Sidewalls. You will experience the utter comfort that was envisaged whilst driving this car. Steering this car is naturally most pleasurable, although setting course may be a more apt description considering the car’s length. The fully rebuilt engine and transmission both acquit themselves effortlessly.

Finally, we turn our attention to the accompanying documentation. There is a copy of the original leaflet, a series of photos relating to the restoration and other general information about the car. One look at the list of optional extras shows us this car has amongst other items: tinted glass, fog lights, gold finish to the grill, a radio, white wall tyres and a heater. In other words, it is a practical full-option vehicle to boot! The Cadillac Series 62 is a rare sight these days. It is difficult to find ones in good condition. This example is ready to go, it is in peak shape and ready to clock up many more miles of uninhibited open automotive pleasure.
