By the end of the 1930s the Cadillac company, jewel in the crown of the General Motors group, had survived the stormy waters of the Wall Street Crash and the Depression which followed it. The survival was largely due to a process of rationalisation of the number of models produced and the astute realisation that the world which had supported the huge V12 and V16 Cadillac ranges with their unique and hugely expensive coachbuilt bodies had disappeared for ever. All Cadillac cars for the 1939 season and beyond used the same engine, a very powerful and refined five-litre V8, and most of the bodies were beautifully designed by the in-house stylists of Fisher and Co.
