The Buick GS Series garnered its own page in the 1969 factory brochure. The model was available as a two-door hardtop (Sport Coupe) in the GS 350, California GS, GS 400 and a GS 400 Convertible was also available. They were photographed featured in a race track setting with open wheel formula cars in the background, as Buick portrayed the car in a performance environment and rightfully so. In General Motors magazine advertisements of the period, the GS 400 was proudly lined up with the Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Chevelle SS 396 and Oldsmobile 4-4-2 to illustrate the depth of company commitment to a line of fast and sporty street contenders.

The Buick Gran Sport was produced from 1965 through 1975 and began life as an option on the Skylark. In 1968 and 1969 Buick offered the GS 400 in a convertible and two-door hardtop model. Standard issue of the GS 400 was a 400-cid V-8 engine with 340 horsepower and 440-ft/lbs torque, a four-barrel Rochester carburetor, dual exhaust and special GS 400 badging that is seen on the radiator grille, rear fender flanks, rear decklid and door trim panels.

This 1969 Buick Gran Sport 400 Convertible is one of just 1,176 produced in 1969. It is presented in Signal Red with its original Parchment interior (seats and door panels in this shade) with a similar colored top. The dash, carpets and center console are in black. The original interior shows “normal wear” and the top is stated to be in “good shape and works perfectly.”

With the functional hood vents, there is also a cool dual induction system with foam “muffs” at the induction end of the air cleaner that help enhances the horsepower. The engine, from the factory, also has a high performance camshaft, fast-flow fuel pump, special calibrated quadra-jet carburetor, high pressure lubrication system and 10:25 to 1 compression ratio. This original 400 unit has been rebuilt using “quality parts” and the Turbo 400 automatic transmission has also been rebuilt. These mechanical fixtures are reported to “work perfectly.” This particular car also has power steering, power brakes, power top, factory “five-spoked, chrome-plated wheels,” deluxe steering wheel (standard), floor console, automatic transmission with “U-shaped shifter, courtesy lamp package, power windows, dual mirrors, upgraded MSD electronics and radio.

With plenty of performance for the enthusiast, the Buick GS 400 is also recognized as being smooth and reliable for everyday driving.
