Description

William I'Anson Ltd are delighted to offer for sale the superb Ex - Charlie Manders, Redmond Gallagher, U.S.R. 1926 Bugatti Type 35A to 35B.

A stunning example of the iconic Grand Prix Bugatti, with a continuous history, pre and post War competition history and still retaining its original chassis, front and rear axles, combined with an original engine gearbox and more 4818 offers a very attractive and exciting prospect indeed and an opportunity not easily repeated.

Supplied new to the Sorel dealership in London in Type 35A form, sold to Ireland in 1930 where it is well documented as being raced and hill climbed between 1932 to 1934 as a Type 35A before being acquired by Redmond Gallagher in 1935 without an engine.

Gallagher had a Ford V8 engine and gearbox fitted as well as a monoposto bodywork reminiscent of the popular ERA. Dubbed the Urney Special Racer or U.S.R., he campaigned 4818 to notable success, breaking the record at the Kilternan hill climb in 1936.

Success continued with Bill McQuillan both before and after the war, with another new record at Kilternan and 3rd in the Limerick Grand Prix.

4818 continued to be raced into the early pre-War years by its next owner Irwin Catherwood who in 1951 won the Sexton Trophy, awarded annually to the season’s most successful Irish racing driver. Not bad in a car now 25 years old.

Retained un-restored in a long term collection in Ireland before being bought and upgraded to a Type 35B by Ivan Dutton in the 1990s after a three decade hibernation. Adding to its already original chassis, front and rear axles and other components; an engine built out of original parts and an original gearbox. Now in the ownership of a well-known Bugatti family, it continues to be used in anger to this day.
