In 1954 Borgward presented the Isabella. Initially the two-door saloon was to be called the Hansa 1500, but the test car’s “Isabella” badges were such a hit with colleagues and press they decided to keep the more elegant name. The Hansa 1500 badge also remained present on early years cars. In 1957 Borgward decided to produce a slimmer 2+2 coupé version, according to many the prettiest car the brand ever produced. The Borgward was nor exactly cheap placed between competitors Ford and Opel, and the less expensive Mercedes-Benz. The unitary body was quite novel at the time and earned praise from the professional press.
Under the bonnet we find a 4-cylinder 1,493 cc engine with a 75 hp output.

Our Isabella was supplied in June of 1957, the first year of production for the Coupé. This early car is therefore quite a lot more desirable. The car is completely original including the working radio and clock. Due to minor paintwork damage the car was resprayed in 2008, keeping its original colour of Ocean Blue Metallic. There has been not need for any panelwork welding or replacement as, remarkably, the car is wholly rust-free; exceptional! More recently in 2022 considerable remedial work was carried out. The original seats were refilled and some mechanical parts such as the alternator, carburettor, fuel pump amongst many others were overhauled. All work has been neatly recorded and is presented with the car.

A rare original Isabella, that rarely if ever becomes available in this exceptional condition. Over the last few decennia purely used for pleasure trips this Bremmen-built 2+2 Coupé fully justifies the title of being in exceptionally wonderful shape. The deep lustre of its paintwork, the lovely brightwork immediately shows its top-class credentials with the same theme carrying on inside. Although original, that does not imply the interior is in any way shabby or in disrepair; thanks to the original upholstery, switching gear and gauges it oozes infinite sophistication.

This Borgward drives a treat. Comfortably seated the gearstick operates its way with ease through the four gears. The engine feels alive adding to the car’s pleasant handling. With overhauled brakes you will have no qualms of its stooping ability.
