About this Collectable

There has never been an M-version of the Z4 E89, but there was little need for one. Instead, there was the Z4 sDrive35is. This has the same engine as the famous 1M Coupé, an adaptive M suspension and a 7-speed DCT gearbox. This particular example is a rare Design Pure Impulse version, with an Atacama yellow exterior. A real Collectable.

After the Z3 and the first generation Z4 (the E85), BMW took a different approach with this E89. Instead of introducing a separate coupé and cabriolet, BMW combined the two into one car. The Z4 E89 has a folding hardtop. This makes the roof stronger, it is quieter in the interior and when closed, this convertible looks like a very attractive coupé.

This Z4 is not the ordinary version, as it is the top of the range, the sDrive35is. It has the same engine as the one used in the BMW 1M: a twin-turbo six-in-line that produces 340 hp and 450 Nm of torque. This gives the sDrive35is almost as much power as the E85 Z4 M and a considerable amount of extra torque. With the overboost function you even get 500 Nm (!) at the rear wheels.

The Z4 sDrive35is doesn't just have M-worthy figures, it is also equipped with an adaptive M suspension and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. A launch control function is also present, which gets you to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.

The more athletic looks are also ensured, as this Z4 is equipped with the M Aerodynamics package. Moreover, this particular example has been finished in a very special colour: Atacamagelb.

This colour is exclusive to the Design Pure Impulse version. This means that this Z4 also has a very distinctive interior. It is finished in a tasteful combination of black and yellow, using alcantara, Nappa leather and piano finish. The contrasting yellow stitching is the icing on the cake.

This 2011 example was originally delivered to Germany (given its unique design and extensive options list, most likely to a BMW employee), but was imported into the Netherlands within a year. There is 83,400 km on the odometer and the car has always been serviced by BMW dealers. In short: this is probably one of the best E89 Z4s around.

Our opinion

A two-seater roadster is the kind of car you don't need, but you do want. Especially if it is a roadster from BMW. The Z4 E89 is a car that can be driven leisurely, but also allows you to carve through bends. With its beautiful long nose and short rear, the Z4 has the classic roadster proportions that you don't see on many modern cars.

But perhaps most importantly, the colour. Atacama yellow. We had to look it up, but it turns out to be a desert in Chile that you should have visited at some point in your life. Just as much a Bucket List thing as a BMW roadster with a three-litre six-in-line, twin turbo and 340 hp.
