Flushed with an abundance of cash holdings in the 1980s, BMW set forth a division to develop new vehicle technologies and concepts. The first of these concepts debuted to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the summer of 1987. The E30-based Z1, or Zukunft 1, German for future, an embodiment of “the future automobile,” demonstrated a removable composite body mounted atop a skeletal frame, complete with doors that dropped into the body sides to provide access.

A “retro” styling exercise recalling the fabulous pre-war 328 and post-war 507 followed in 1996. The Z3 based its drivetrain and chassis on the successful, tried and tested E36 3-series and sold in massive numbers. Adding to the Z3’s significance was BMW’s decision to put it into production solely at their South Carolina factory, the first car from the BMW product line to be built from inception solely in the US. Significant as it was from a styling and production perspective, with its original 1.9L 4-cylinder, the Z3 was more of a Sunday cruiser than a flat-out sports car.

In 2003 came the E85 Z4, larger, stiffer, and barely any heavier than the predecessor Z3. Exterior design criticisms of past models were addressed, while the interior benefitted from an uptick in material quality. The move upmarket meant that the car would not sell in considerable quantities like the Z3 but with 6 choices of engines during a 6-year run meant that there was a Z4 for everyone.

This exceptional US market example, chassis 4USBT53413LT21084, is believed to have found its first owner in Minnesota. The new BMW was finished in the marvelous non-metallic Urban Green over Beige interior with a matching soft top, just as it appears today. Well-equipped, notable optional equipment includes Convenience Package, Premium Package, and Sport Package, the latter including dynamic driving control, 18” wheels, and a sports suspension. And though it can go without saying, most notable is the car’s drivetrain: a perky hi revving 225HP 3.0L 6-cylinder mated to a 6-Speed manual transmission.

The most recent owner acquired the car in 2008 with a mere 5,000 recorded. Two years later, a hardtop was obtained from BMW of Boise, ID, color-matched and fitted to the car, and remains included today. Linear service records are on file, showing most recently a fluid flush and a fresh set of Continental Extremecontact Sport tires. Today, this modern collectible has covered a miraculous 19,650 miles and remains in its original well-preserved condition throughout.

It is offered with a CARFAX report, owner’s handbooks, and many factory accessories
