Estimated Price: £50,000 - £60,000

Few BMWs possess quite the individuality of the Z3 M Coupé. With its long bonnet, compact two-seat cabin and broad-shouldered rear bodywork, it remains one of the most recognisable products of BMW’s M division. Its unusual proportions were born of an engineering ambition: to combine the Z3 platform with the greater structural rigidity of a fixed-roof body. The result was a purposeful driver’s car whose distinctive appearance has become an important part of its appeal.

First shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1997, the M Coupé reached production the following year. Beneath that unconventional silhouette lay a compelling combination of a naturally aspirated straight-six, rear-wheel drive and a five-speed manual gearbox. Its compact dimensions, muscular rear arches, four exhaust outlets and purposeful stance gave it an identity quite separate from the M3, whilst retaining the engineering pedigree associated with that badge.

The final development arrived in 2001, when BMW installed the S54 engine developed for the E46 M3. This sophisticated 3.2-litre unit brought individual throttle butterflies, Double VANOS variable valve timing and the responsive, high-revving character that makes this generation of M powerplant so rewarding. The attraction extended beyond the engine itself, with Dynamic Stability Control among the changes introduced for the later cars. Crucially, only 165 right-hand drive S54 M Coupés were produced, making this a particularly scarce derivative within an already exclusive model range.

For enthusiasts, the S54 therefore represents a particularly appealing combination: the distinctive shape and intimate driving environment of the Z3 M Coupé, paired with one of BMW M’s most celebrated six-cylinder engines. The manual transmission places the driver at the centre of the experience, whilst the useful rear luggage area adds a practical dimension unusual in such a compact two-seater. It is a car with sufficient character to stand alongside the better-known M models without being overshadowed by them.

The example offered here adds a suitably distinctive colour to that specification. Phoenix Yellow Metallic was introduced to the M Coupé palette with the S54 update and is closely associated with BMW’s performance cars of this period. Its changing gold and yellow tones suit the Coupé’s pronounced curves particularly well, drawing attention to the rear haunches and giving this already individual design an unmistakable presence.

Acquired by our vendor in almost twelve years ago, the car was immediately entrusted to BMW for servicing, continuing a comprehensive service history containing numerous stamps from its earlier life. It returned to BMW around 2022 and has covered very little mileage since, remaining a cherished part of our vendor’s extensive private collection. Just 23,402 miles are recorded at the time of cataloguing, and it will come to the sale with a fresh MOT.

For somebody assembling a collection of BMWs from this era, the combination is persuasive: limited right-hand drive production, the sought-after S54 engine, a distinctive period colour and notably low mileage, supported by long-term ownership and a comprehensive service history. Alongside an E46 M3 or other contemporary M models, this Phoenix Yellow Coupé would bring both mechanical relevance and a character entirely its own.
