Description

Chassis No. WBABA91040AL06957

Built in Munich between March 1989 and June 1991, the Z1 was BMW's rolling showcase for engineering ideas. First were the innovative Xenoy thermoplastic body panels and doors that retract vertically into the sills rather than swing open. Underneath, a purpose-built Z-Axle multi-link rear suspension paired with the contemporary 325i's front end and 2.5-liter M20 inline-six.

This Z1 completed production on 19 February 1991 and was specified in Traumschwarz Metallic (Dream Black Metallic) with a Dark Grey Nubuck and camouflage-pattern leather interior. It reached AC Schnitzer's Freilassing works on 25 February 1991, believed to be one of just 10 Z1s to receive the tuner's complete performance conversion, boring the M20 six to 2.7 liters with its own 81 mm stroke crankshaft and 84 mm pistons for a dyno-verified 197 PS, a 16-percent gain over standard. Larger 17-inch wheels, 30 mm lowering springs, and Bilstein shock absorbers completed the conversion.

First registered on 12 June 1991 through Schnitzer's own dealership, its original service book records the dealer's stamp and earliest services there. Sold via Sytner BMW, the car left for the United Kingdom in October 1997 at 20,017 km, its speedometer swapped to miles and reading just 1,298 by its next service in 1998. A decade of UK service stamps carried it to 60,501 miles by September 2009, before returning to the Netherlands in 2011 with its kilometer speedometer reinstalled. The current owner acquired it in March 2018, returned it to Germany, and commissioned a major service that May for €13,427; Munich's records then read 32,715 km against roughly 135,000 km as the accumulated total for this Z1 today.

Rare among Z1S to carry AC Schnitzer's conversion in full, this example pairs its added output and race-bred chassis with the roadster's signature retracting doors and open-top presence. The result is a thoroughly enhanced alternative to the standard Z1, exactly as AC Schnitzer intended.
