Description

Chassis No. WBSEG9329SCD00197

The 8-series coupe was BMW's most costly and exclusive, top-of-the-range model in the mid-1990s, representing a true modern-day, sophisticated grand tourer. At the top of the line was the 850 CSi, which utilized the same engine as the 850 i, but with numerous modifications, including enlarged 5.6-litre displacement and fitted with Bosch Motronic 1.7 fuel injection to produce 380 bhp at 5,300 rpm, delivered through a six-speed manual transmission in keeping with the car's performance image. The suspension was modified with electronic dampers, stiffer springs, and a reduced ride height. Other distinctive touches included front and rear bumpers reshaped to be more aerodynamic, as well as wider wheels and four round stainless steel exhaust tips.

The run of this model ended in 1996, as its engine could not be modified to meet incoming emissions standards. A small production run of only 1,510 850 CSis were produced, of which just 250 were sold in the United States, making this automobile incredibly rare even when new. Few were preserved by their later owners and to find one in excellent original order is a rare, sought-after opportunity.

Jim Taylor acquired his original low-mileage 850 CSi, equipped with a power sunroof, BMW Dolby digital stereo, and six-disc CD changer, from Michael D. Bozarth of Newport Beach, California, in June 2008, and it has now been in his ownership for fourteen years. Inspection shows that it retains its factory Ascot Green Metallic finish, confirmed by consistent paint meter readings throughout, while the tan leather interior and grey carpets are also in excellent order. At the time of cataloging, the car had recorded only 30,998 miles.

These are truly wonderful automobiles to drive, and this particular example is ripe for such use, just as it has been enjoyed by its current gentleman owner for well over a decade.
