Added to the model range in 1954, the BMW 502 shared its body and chassis with the 501, but was powered by an all-new 2.6-litre V-8 engine and sold as a premium saloon. In April 1957, an enlarged 3,168 cc engine became available. Badged by BMW as the “3.2 Super”, these 502s could reach speeds of 170 km/h, thanks to a healthy output of 140 PS from the 3.2-litre engine.
This 502 was built as a 3.2 Super and left the Munich factory on 26 March 1959. It was delivered to the BMW dealer, Paolini of Rome, on 10 April, and was first registered on 23 June 1959. The car was first owned through a limited company called A. Menarini. On 29 April 1960, this 3.2 Super was acquired by the second owner. It remained in her care for 53 years before being purchased by the third owner in April 2013. The consigning owner acquired this 502 3.2 Super in 2016, and the car was exported from Italy.
Today, this 3.2 Super is finished in an elegant shade of blue, with the cabin trimmed in grey velour, offered for sale almost as it would have been when new. Please note, this vehicle has spent time on static display as part of a museum exhibition, and so will require mechanical inspection prior to returning to the road. This BMW presents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a well-presented example of the 3.2 Super, a car not produced in large numbers, and rarely seen on public roads.
