In 1971, BMW commissioned Alpina to develop a lightweight version of the 3.0 CS to homologate the model for competition use. By employing alloy body panels, Plexiglas, and removing insulation, approximately 200 kilograms was saved. These cars were named “Coupe Sport Leicht” to reflect these results. For 1972, BMW fitted the 200-horsepower fuel-injected straight-six from the E9 CSi.
Manufactured on 19 December 1972 and delivered on 1 February 1973, this BMW 3.0 CSL was finished in the stunning Sonderlackierung shade of Türkis Green and was configured with the “City Package”. As a special wishes colour, it is thought that fewer than 10 3.0 CSLs were painted in Türkis Green. Accordingly, it features power steering and windows plus improved insulation. Supplied new to BMW dealer and racing driver Bepp Mayer, the car was owned by a BMW tuning workshop in the 1980s. The historic German title details further ownership history and, prior to being acquired by the consignor, it is reported that the engine benefited from an overhaul. In 2016, the current owner commissioned a nut-and bolt-restoration, returning the car to its factory-correct colour scheme. Restoration invoices and photographs are available to view on file.
As per the accompanying BMW Group Classic certificate, this 3.0-litre CSL retains its matching-numbers engine. The vehicle is fitted with a period-correct front spoiler, spare steel boot lid with spoiler, and Alpina alloy wheels. It presents a wonderful opportunity to own a German-delivered, matching-numbers example of BMW’s homologation special from the 1970s.
