The BMW E9 is a very popular car with many. Stylish, sportive, luxurious, an allrounder. Early 70’s sees BMW very involved in the sports car sector, with the BMW 3.0 CSL as their weapon of choice. A car that remains stuck to sportscar lovers retinas and due to its aggressive appearance earnt the nickname the Batmobile. It is also the first car to sport the red/purple/blue stripes that were to signify the M Motorsport colours.
It is not just its striking presence that impresses, its performance is not to be sniffed at either: The CSL was victorious on six occasions in the Group 2 class European Touring Car Championship, in 1973 with Toine Hezemans as well as from 1975 to 1979. Not so strange then that it is a car BMW enthusiasts consider to be the holy grail.

You will not get any closer to that holy grail than this Batmobile here. This coupé started life as a BMW 3.0 SC in 1972. Then the three litre was taken in hand by Alpina according to B2 specifications. At that time Alpina was not yet an official car manufacturer but instead a BMW accredited tuner. In the German paperwork we can find back that this BMW had an Alpina engine fitted. After a period of time this CS was completely converted to meet CSL-specs. Ready for Group 2 races as well as exceptionally having a road licence. The Dutch owner was able to drive on public roads with the Dutch number plate currently affixed to this BMW Alpina.

Even better than public roads is driving on a track. This BMW is more than ready with an unbelievable list of adjustments and modern modifications. Starting with the 2,986 cc large heart: recently a new sub block (read factory new) was fitted as well as every used part replaced or reconditioned to a pristine standard. The block, pistons, everything is new crafted by Alpina. The B2 engine is simply new and perfectly tuned to deliver 240 hp at 6,750 rpm on the rolling road. The engine has been tuned according to the original B2 recipe, resulting in a block tuned for the high rev range. For additional security a sump with extra dividers was fitted. The original 4-speed gearbox was overhauled and produces a precise and supple gear movement.

The suspension is conform the rest of the car also brand new. Again the work carried out is of top quality and done just like the racers were done in the past. The fully adjustable and calibrated rear axle is part of the modern upgrades. The brakes are more than up to the job and are race-worthy. Changing the special roadworthy Avon tyres to the slicks that come with the car allows you to fully experience the thrill of the track to the max.

The interior also complies with the race-spec. Everything that is surplus to requirement has been jettisoned. In its place we have a minimal dashboard with essential meters and a centre console with rocker switches and buttons. The dashboard is clad in alcantara as are the period correct black and red pipped bucket seats. Strapped in the OMP harness you can tackle any track with left and right Lexan windows, a very professional roll cage and a very nice feeling racing steering wheel in your hands.

And then there is the outward profile. Normally we would describe that firstly but I guess we got a bit carried away with the mechanical side of things. In short the bodywork is stunning. Actually totally new with the correct finish. In this case that mean the paintwork has been thinly applied as a weight reducing measure. The added bonus is that the Kevlar parts are easily recognisable. As said the bodywork is in a fully restored state. The wide arches, individual well aligned panelwork and the sparse brightwork and lighting parts, everything is in a formidable state.

In short: This BMW 3.0 CS Alpina B2-spec is a unique creation. A fantastic neck tuner on the public road and an uncompromised racer on the track. You wont find the like any time soon.
