Description
1972 BMW 3.0 CSL.
Rare ‘City Pack’ limited-edition.
Ripe for restoration.
Manufactured on 6 November 1972 according to BMW Classic (Germany), this 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was delivered new by the UK importer just a day later. What’s more, this is a rare limited-edition ‘City Pack’ car – just 500 right-hand drive examples were made – that was originally finished in Inka (orange), though it is now finished in black. The CSL was imported here in 1989 by our vendor with the intention of a full restoration, but unfortunately life has gotten in the way and he is reluctantly selling. Dry stored since arriving here, the big BMW has certainly seen better days. There’s rust bubbling through on the bottom of the left rear guard, a hole in the right front guard, surface rust here and there, pitting to the chrome, and the dull black paint is crazed, scratched and chipped. It has its factory alloys and chrome wheel arch embellishers intact, however the left front guard vent is missing, as is the driver’s exterior mirror both of which are stored in the boot. Inside it’s in better shape, the black leather and cloth trim probably salvageable and the wood trim quite good, but the factory carpets will need replacing. An aftermarket sports steering wheel is fitted, and the original radio is missing, though there are a pair of non-factory Pioneer speakers in the parcel shelf. The interior is certainly better than the exterior, and under the bonnet for that matter, where everything appears to be there but in need of TLC, including the under-bonnet insulation which is falling off. This ’72 BMW also comes with its Australian Import papers. There’s no question this is a project and a decent one at that, but it is all largely there and would be tremendously rewarding to do. And you’d end up with a very rare car that’s highly valued by the collector car market. Previously on UK registration, the 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL ‘City Pack’ is being offered for sale here unregistered.
