The Model: When BMW announced the 2002 would be discontinued at the end of the 1976 model year, enthusiasts had tear in their eyes. BMW had worked its way into the world of modern sports cars throughout the 1960’s, and the 2002 cemented this Bavarian carmaker’s leadership position. Outstanding handling, superb mechanics and a dedicated following of enthusiasts made the 2002 an instant classics. With the engine up front, drive wheels to the rear, fully independent suspension, and the venerable Getrag “232” 4-speed transmission, there was nothing to complain about with the 2002, which were officially deemed sedans but performed like sport coupes. With most sports cars of the day, to go out for a good Sunday drive meant spending Saturday under the hood and chassis. With the 2002, a good Sunday drive usually came after a great Saturday drive as the BMW’s engineering was dialed in from the start, hard to improve upon perfection.

The Car: BMW built the 2002 to be driven and enjoyed, and this example has been used for just that purpose. While the true mileage of this car is unknown, our inspection showed that this is a solid car mechanically sound with lots of fun and excitement left. Treated to a repaint in its original color within the past few years, the interior appears to be mostly original. The engine fires up easily, sounds smooth and ready to take to the road. Shifting is effortless and the tracking is straight and true. Fitted with a vintage, Blaupunkt AM/FM CD player and full instrumentation, it has been maintained for action. This 2002 was fitted with air-conditioning, but currently the underhood components are missing. It is fitted with factory alloy wheels and what appear to be fairly fresh Michelin radial tires. This is an attractive “gocar” ready to take you to new vistas of excitement.
