Description

1974 BMW/ALPINA-A4 Tii

Collector Owned

BACKGROUND:

This 1974 BMW 2002 Tii was built January14,1974. With just under 10,000 miles on it, Bob Murphy, creator of the USA Tii Registry, purchased it in 1975. Bob owned the vehicle for thirty-three years. In addition to being director of the Tii Registry, Bob played a key role in bringing BMW AG Mobile Tradition and the BMW Car Club of America together when they were both in their nascent age. His relationship with BMW AG provided him with a voice for 2002 owners with his knowledge and input for the development of parts no longer made by BMW. Many a member was greatly aided by his writings in the Tii Registry.

Bob’s Tii began as a normal restoration project and transitioned with a spectacular rare Tii combining the best of the 2002 Turbo and Alpina A4S with his Tii. Many new and original OEM parts were used throughout the restoration. It is a perfect example of old school enthusiast approach to tuning and personalization: each individual part was selected after countless hours of research and sourcing by Bob hunting down through letters, phone calls and his many contacts in the BMW classic car world. This is the car he would have liked to purchase off the showroom floor.

EXTERIROR:

Bob began the five year bare metal nut and bolt restoration back in March of 1999. The restoration was a no expense spared process with the body completely stripped and repainted with Glazurit Polaris base and clear coat. Parts not replaced with new were stripped and CAD plated. The color matched bumpers were replaced by Rey Rivera with a Euro Bumper Kit . Additionally, he added a Turbo Spoiler and a center mounted antennae to the boot lid.The trunk boards rest on an aluminum tray modified to accept the 2002 Turbo Fuel Tank for larger fuel capacity. The battery, accompanied by a trickle charger, was relocated to the trunk for battery maintenance with an hour running meter and additional battery terminals have been fitted under the hood.

INTERIOR:

A new OEM 2002 Turbo Dash was installed. The Alpina 320mm steering wheel and shift were installed by Rey Rivera. The gauge pod houses a specially designed knock sensor and matching air/fuel meter. The A/C blows ice cold helped by a modern rotary compressor as well as ungraded hoses and components. Dynamat heat and noise insulation was installed under the “lux” black wool carpet as well as behind the door panels and above the headliner. The Blaupunkt radio is enriched by the Hirschman amplifier and speakers. The Recaro Seats, installed by Rey Rivera, provide the complete sport feel for the car.

MECHANICAL:

During the late ‘60’s and 70’s the German Tuner Alpina offered a range of performance upgrades for the 2002. Alpina designated their four
cylinder BMW M 10 Moto r conversions with the letter “A” of which the A1 A4 versions were available for sale. The only version using the Kugelfischer injection pump was the A4 which came in two versions: 160HP A4 and the 175HP A4S. Over the total production period (184) A4 engines and (90) A4S engines were built. Bob selected the 175HP A4S version and added the rare Bosch Electronic Ignition System Thunderbolt with the knock sensing transistorized ignition. He increased displacement with second over Mahle Pistons and had the cylinder head re-worked for increased air flow as well as adding new late model valve guides. An Abarth Exhaust System was added by Rey Rivera. The driving force was improved by a rare BMW new “Dog Leg” Getrag 240 Close Ratio 5 Speed gear box transferring power to the Limited Slip differential. The alternator was upgraded to (95) amps and additional Bosch Relays were installed to help with items like the Euro Z-Beam Head lights and the Hella Driving Lights. Bob sourced NOS (New Old Stock) struts and brake calipers from the BMW 2002 Turbo along NOS OEM Turbo External Oil Cooler , Turbo radiator and larger cooling fan.
