Description
Introduced in 1968, the 2002 performed and handled well thanks to a 2.0-liter
four-cylinder engine producing 100 hp, a fully independent suspension, and
front disc brakes. A sales hit upon introduction, the 2002 helped establish
BMW’s reputation in the US for building compact sporting sedans.
From 1971 to 1975, a convertible variant of the 2002 was offered. Developed
and manufactured by Karosserie Baur, the conversion allowed the 2002 to be
driven with the removable targa roof section in place or stored in the trunk
above the luggage. The rear window section could also be lowered for an almost
fully open-air experience.
One of 2,317 examples built, this 1973 BMW 2002 Targa is finished in desirable
Taiga Green Metallic over a black vinyl interior and top. Delivered new in
Germany, this example has benefited from a thorough cosmetic and mechanical
restoration by BMW specialist Oldenzaal Classics in The Netherlands. Completed
circa 2017, the Targa was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its original
eye-catching hue. The interior was reupholstered using correct materials, while
the engine and gearbox were rebuilt.
Coupling imaginative German engineering with alfresco motoring, this 1973
BMW 2002 Targa presents very nicely throughout and is ready to be driven or
displayed by its next owner.
