Looking back on BMW’s meteoric rise to global popularity in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the 2002 was clearly the progenitor of the success that the company has enjoyed ever since. The 2002 was conceived as a pareddown two-door version of the Neue Klasse (New Class) sedan, which debuted in 1966 and was an instant hit. Engine displacement and induction specifications for the 2002 changed steadily in the ensuing years and culminated in the fuel-injected two-liter 2002 tii. The tii also featured emboldened MacPherson struts and enlarged front disc brakes.
