‘It is extraordinarily difficult to explain in words or writing the exact fascination of a big, fast car of the type so ably represented by the big Bentley speed model.’ The Autocar on the Bentley Speed Six, September 5th, 1930.
From the humblest of beginnings in a mews garage off Baker Street, London in 1919 the Bentley rapidly achieved fame as an exciting fast touring car, well able to compete with the best of European and American sports cars in the tough world of motor sport in the 1920s.
In 1928 the Speed Six model, WO Bentley’s favorite car, was introduced.
The Speed Six twice won the Le Mans 24 hours as well as distinguishing itself at various Brooklands meetings.
The Speed Six was powered by a 6597cc straight-six engine that developed 160bhp (later 180bhp) and well over 400lbft of torque thanks to a ‘hotter’ camshaft, higher compression ratio and twin SU carburettors.
Capable of over 100mph (depending upon gearing) and with nearly twice as much power on tap as a Rolls-Royce Phantom I, the Bentley has some claim to being Britain’s first supercar.
