This prestigious Continental S2 cabriolet by Park Ward comes with transparent history, having spent a large part of its life as a summer car in Florida. It was delivered new in November 1961 and the first owner kept the car until 1969. It appeared for sale that year with Taylor, the dealer in Palm Beach, who sold it to a certain Mr Currie.
An advert placed in the Flying Lady publication by Mr Currie’s son in 2000 informs us that the car had always been kept at the family’s second home in Florida, was never used in the winter, and had covered 69,000 miles at that point. A restoration of the interior coachwork and the hood had been carried out between 1984 and 1986. In the 2000s, the car was brought over to Europe where it became the property of a Belgian collector and used at his residence in Bordeaux.
Presented in a stunning black livery with Magnolia interior, our Parisian collector was unable to resist this cabriolet and bought it in 2011. Being particularly fastidious about the condition of his cars, the Bentley was sent to the specialist P&A Wood to ensure it ran perfectly. Thus, in March 2012, with a mileage of 70,812 miles, a major overhaul was carried out requiring 200 hours of labour. The beige soft-top was renewed in 2012 to make sure it was completely water-tight. The carburettors, brakes, cooling system and many other elements were refurbished. Between 2012 and 2013 some £50,000 was spent at P&A Wood to bring the car up to the standard required by our Parisian collector. Since this work was carried out, he has had few opportunities to enjoy his car which has under 72,000 miles on the clock today.
This particularly rare and stylish car handles surprisingly well offering its occupants an incredibly smooth ride. Extremely rare, being one of just 61 examples built, this cabriolet will make an exclusive collector’s car for the discerning enthusiast.
The auction of this lot will take place on Friday 18 March 2022.
