Description

The Bentley S-Type was debuted for the 1955 model year, offering visual improvements over the R-Type, but retaining the basic mechanical specification that made Bentleys from this period such fantastic motorcars. While over 3,500 S1 models were built, the top-specification Continental was limited to 431 examples, all of which were bodied by outside coachbuilders.

This S1 Continental is a 1958 Flying Spur model, denoting its four-door coachwork applied by H.J. Mulliner (body no. 6104). Copies of factory documents on file show that this Flying Spur was delivered to its first owner, John Dimick of Washington, D.C., through dealer J.S. Inskip in New York. Originally finished in Shell Grey over a blue and grey cloth interior, it was fitted from new with power steering and an automatic transmission.

While its interim history is unknown, circa the 1970s this Continental was purchased by famed actor Richard Anderson, whose successful role in the television series The Six Million Dollar Man allowed him to fulfill a long-held dream of owning a Flying Spur.

Now finished in the classic color combination of green over a black leather interior, this Continental was acquired by Mark Smith in 2020, and subsequently sent to Palma Auto Repair in Audubon, New Jersey. An invoice on file totaling nearly $10,000 shows that the brake, fuel, and charging systems were given significant attention.

Showing a warm patina from years of careful use, this Bentley still wears its California blue plate from its time with Richard Anderson, when it was reportedly a common sight in Hollywood and many red-carpet events around town. Its next owner will undoubtedly find its rich history a great conversation starter at marque meetings and tours.
