Story

It took two years to perfect the convertible version of the brand's first hatchback with a monocoque body.

To achieve a sufficiently reinforced body, the engineers had to make radical changes to the platform.

Like its Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow convertible twin, the Bentley T Series convertible

changed its name in 1971 to Corniche, the same name used by both brands.

Until 1984, only the front grille distinguished a Bentley Corniche from a Rolls-Royce Corniche.

Sales of the Bentley then became confidential.

In July 1984, the decision was taken to better differentiate the Bentley model, which

was then distinguished by a new name, Continental, a famous label, a radiator grille painted the same colour as the bodywork and new wheels.

As a result, the car enjoyed renewed interest from its target audience, making

Bentley slightly more exclusive than Rolls-Royce.

The balance of sales between the two models then narrowed considerably, with 456

Bentley Continentals sold between 1984 and 1995 compared with 1,921 Rolls-Royce Corniches.

After 1995, the situation was reversed in Bentley's favour.

The Continental was replaced by the Azure convertible, derived from the

Continental coupé, while the Rolls-Royce Corniche did not follow in its footsteps.
