Description

1922 BENJAMIN TYPE B « DÉCA » TORPÉDO

French title
Chassis n° 1689

• Rare and interesting model
• Engine redone in 2018
• Restoration from bare chassis up

At the 1922 Motor Show, at Benjamin's stand, customers were offered around 20 bodies on the 5HP chassis, with the possibility of a 12-month credit. Among the most desirable, the "Deca" torpedo, with a pair of staggered seats, combined sportiness with comfort. Its brilliant small 4-cylinder Lemaître et Gérard engine also gave it sparkling performance. This example was found in Saône et Loire under a pile of hay, complete and well preserved. Its previous owner acquired it in 1983 before focusing on a restoration chassis upwards, which was completed in the mid-90s. A list of the work done and photos attest to this careful restoration, which has aged well. In 2018, the current owner gave the engine to Culasses 77 for a complete overhaul, the invoice of which totals more than € 9,500. With its slender appearance, this little cyclecar is full of delightful details, such as the "Voiclair" wiper, the beautiful thermometer that overhangs its radiator, or the fuel gauge that you "just" need to dip into the fuel tank. This Benjamin, which comes with a second engine block, offers the opportunity to rediscover a beautiful French brand, and the possibility of fun drives, which could take you into a distant past.

The auction of this lot will take place on Friday 18 March 2022.
