Numerous forms of transport were conceived during the 20th century, but when the General Cab Company imported 500 Renault cabs into England in 1906, the aesthetic character of London''s streets was changed forever. In 1907, when the fitting of taximeters was made compulsory, the name cab was extended to taxicab and was subsequently abbreviated to the great British entity that is, the Taxi. In 1928 Herbert Austin was approached regarding the modification of an Austin 12/4 chassis in order to comply with the London ''Conditions of Fitness''. The design was celebrated and became a popular choice for the fact that its height far surpassed that of the competition from Morris Commercials and Beardmore.
