Description

The Austin Healey Sprite was announced to the press in Monte Carlo on 20th May 1958, just before the Monaco Grand Prix. It was intended to be a low-cost sportier successor to the pre-war Austin Seven. The little Sprite quickly became affectionately known as the ‘Frog Eye’ in the UK and the ‘Bug Eye’ in the US as its headlights were prominently mounted on top of the bonnet, inboard of the front wings. There were no exterior door handles, the driver and passenger were required to reach inside to open the doors. There was also no boot lid and access to the spare wheel and luggage compartment was achieved by tilting the seat backs forward and reaching under the rear deck.

The Austin Healey Sprite offered here at Autostorico was supplied in 1959. Finished in Leaf Green with Green interior this stunning example was purchased by its current owner in the early 1970s. During his ownership the car has been extremely well maintained with a new MG 1275cc engine and four speed gearbox fitted in 1973. The car has been in regular use throughout his ownership with several trips into Europe, before a comprehensive restoration was completed in the mid 1990s. Works included removing the engine and gearbox and stripping the whole body, before a bare metal respray was carried out. The car was also subject to a full mechanical overhaul including engine, gearbox, suspension and braking system along with a re-wire. Having just returned from a major pre-sales service carried out by Haileywood Specialist Cars. Still retaining its all-important Steel bonnet and original Steering wheel. Other notable features include; Tonneau cover, Side screens, Convertible hood, Wire wheels and driving lamps.

Supplied with an extensive history file including a current V5 registration document and other related material.
