Description

"Introduced for 1956, the Austin Healey 100/6 represented the most radical step forward in the development of the ‘Big Healey’. Despite its initial success, sales of the original Austin Healey 100 had begun to decline by the mid-1950s and so the model was revamped as the 100/6 using the BMC 2.6 litre C-Series six-cylinder engine replacing the four-cylinder Austin Atlantic engine. This six-cylinder, pushrod engine produced 102bhp, twelve horsepower more than its predecessor, though the inevitable weight gain meant that there was little improvement in performance, the cars top speed remaining around 103mph. At the same time, the wheelbase was increased by two inches from 7’6” to 7’8”, which enabled the inclusion of two seats in the rear of the BN4 variant. Although stylistically very similar to the earlier model the 100/6 was nevertheless easily distinguishable by its ‘crinkle’ radiator grille and the bonnet top air intake. In 1957, an improved engine became available and this 117bhp unit was fitted to all the newly introduced BN6 two-seater roadsters. Top speed improved to 111mph and 1.7 seconds was cut from the 0-60mph time.
Presented in Yukon Green with beautifully trimmed leather stitched bucket seats, a wood rim steering wheel and a contrasting white hardtop, this example was supplied new to California. Since then, this 100/6 has been repatriated and converted to right hand drive during its subsequent restoration. The fully encompassing works included a new fabricated chassis frame, all aluminium body panels sourced from A-Head 4 Healeys Ltd of Rugby, making the car very light indeed. This allowed for sunken headlamps to be fitted to the front shroud augmented by rally style driving lamps. The engine was dis-assembled to its last component and fully rebuilt with a custom-built gas flowed head with larger valves and double valve springs, oversized pistons before being converted to fuel injection. That not only means that this 100/6 is a lot more reliable than a stock car, but it also develops a lot more power.
Fitted with Minilite alloy wheels, the bushes and tie rods have been upgraded, with new braided lines for fuel and copper lines for brakes, coupled with facet electric pump in the boot with accumulator. A new wiring loom was fitted and the interior tastefully and beautifully trimmed in tobacco coloured leather including the comfortable bucket style sets. Also added are modern upgrades to the stereo and USB charging equipment.
This was all topped off with an easily removed Old English White soft top as a contrast to the dark grey paintwork, removing it is as simple as undoing four retaining fasteners. This is an ideal car for hill climbs, rallies, and competition work. A sorted and extremely fast yet very driveable example, we are informed performance wise it shares no resemblance to the three litre Healeys being far faster with better handing and more agile. This is a stunning Mille Miglia eligible example estimated at a fraction of the cost of the restoration.
Interested parties please note the most recent V5 for this car has been misplaced and therefore has been reapplied for, this will arrive in due course and forwarded on to the successful bidder.
