Description
Engine No. V/580/5171/LFA
Affectionately known as a "Brute in a Suit," Aston Martin's muscular and long-lived V8 was produced for two decades, a testament to the good looks and engineering prowess and the resulting popularity from that formidable combination. Such was the popularity of the convertible offered from June of 1978, Aston Martin would build the coupe to individual demand just a few short years after the Volante's debut. A prominent change was the replacement of the previous bonnet scoop with a closed "power bulge," which improved the car's aerodynamic efficiency and visual appeal. Additionally, a new rear spoiler was integrated into the tail, further enhancing the vehicle's aerodynamic profile. The interior also saw the reintroduction of wood trim, a feature last seen in the DB2/4 of the 1950s, adding a classic touch of luxury.
Upon placing an order for a Volante, the detailed manufacturing process began, taking nearly four months to complete. This 1980 Aston Martin V8 Volante was delivered new in the United States prior to being imported to Germany by the current owner. A copy of a Texas title issued on 6 May 1986 shows that the car was exported on 7 September 1988. A handwritten note indicates that the Aston Martin was purchased for $60,000 from the Auto Toy Store in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which included the car being delivered to Germany via sea freight. Additional documentation shows that the car was restored over a two-year period prior to it being first registered in Germany on 30 April 1990. This work included refinishing and retrimming the car in its current green over tan combination from the previous Dover White over Blue leather. This included nearly 30,000 DM worth of interior work, which included purchasing 27 square meters of leather to completely recover the interior. After the restoration, the car was enjoyed for many years and regular servicing. This included upgrading the transmission from its original three-speed configuration to a four-speed automatic transmission in 2014 for a total cost of nearly 20,000€.
Today, this 1980 Aston Martin V8 Volante stands as a beautiful example of the marque benefiting from long-term ownership for a remarkable 36 years. Finished in an iconic color combination and benefiting from an upgraded four-speed transmission, this Volante is ready to be enjoyed by its next caretaker.
