Description

Aston Martin launched the DB5, the successor to the DB4, in 1963 with a larger 4.0-litre engine and three SU carburetors standard, yielding greater performance with substantially higher power output. Some 170 updates and refinements enhanced the experience, and after the first 50 or so DB5s were built, the sturdy ZF five-speed gearbox became standard, perfect for fast motorway use. Fundamental specifications pioneered by the DB4 remained with the new DB5, including the DOHC aluminum engine architecture, four-wheel disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, and aluminum- alloy bodywork in the patented Superleggera (Super light) technique of Milan’s Carrozzeria Touring.

Numbered DB5/1690/R, this 1964 Aston Martin DB5 was the first of Neil Peart’s “Silver Surfers” car collection. According to a copy of the original factory production record, it was delivered new on December 12, 1964, to Thomas Jones & Sons Ltd. in Liverpool, factory-finished in Silver Birch paint over Dark Blue Connolly leather upholstery. “Non-Standard” (optional) equipment included chrome road wheels, a heated rear window, and a Motorola radio with power aerial. According to the factory record, the original-type clutch was subsequently upgraded and the second owner of the DB5 was T.J.R. Lilley, Esq. of London. The DB5 remained in the UK until the early-to-mid 2000s, when it was imported to California.

Mr. Peart acquired the Aston Martin in 2008, and under his ownership, it was methodically and thoroughly serviced, maintained, and sorted with a multitude of fine details addressed by Aston Martin of Silicon Valley. Among the work performed, the engine was rebuilt to larger 4.2-liter specification in 2009 and new Borrani wire wheels were fitted. Aston Martin and Jaguar specialist Ken Lovejoy had already been maintaining the DB5 for the prior owner and has continued to do so since the car was purchased by Neil Peart. Mr. Lovejoy was introduced to Mr. Peart, marking the start of a working relationship and a decade-long friendship. Mr. Lovejoy has recalled that the DB5, with its upgraded three Weber carburetors, was one of Mr. Peart’s favorite classic sports cars to drive, with many adventures including enjoyable drives along Pacific Coast Highway and even on the track at California racing venues.

The DB5’s documentation is extensive, including a copy of the original factory chassis record, a logbook, and a wealth of detailed service and maintenance invoices and parts receipts. Accompanying items include a set of three SU carburetors, a second set of wire-wheels, an Aston Martin DB5 instruction book, car cover, tool roll, and knock-off wheel hammer. Resplendent in its Silver paint over black leather upholstery and benefiting from fastidious care and maintenance, Neil Peart’s DB5 stands ready for a caring new owner to enjoy and appreciate its timeless character
