Launched in 1963, the Aston Martin DB5 will always be an icon of the 1960s, thanks to its prestigious role in the famous James Bond film Goldfinger, which overshadowed the company’s sporting reputation. A direct descendant of the DB4, it kept that model’s overall design, but with much more subtle styling. Under the bonnet, the straight-six engine was enlarged to 4 litres and developed 286bhp.
This DB5 was delivered on 8 February 1965, in right-hand drive and finished in Dubonnet red with a black Connolly leather interior. Alain Aziza bought it on 14 April 2012 at an auction organised by the Commercial Court in Milan. It was a very good example, with its original engine, and had been fully by Aston Workshop three years earlier in 2008. At the request of the then owner, the car was converted to left-hand drive to high-quality standards, electric power steering was fitted, James Bond style wing mirrors were fitted, an exhaust system was installed and the engine was given a thorough overhaul. At the time of the sale, a full report was prepared by the Sales Service and Heritage Centre Belgium. This indicated that the car was in excellent condition in all respects, including the bodywork, underbody, engine and interior. Aziza kept this legendary DB5 in his well-known garage in Paris, using it sparingly but enthusiastically. This is a truly superb example that Alain Aziza had chosen, with his sharp eyes, for the quality of its restoration and of this car that has become a real myth today!
