‘When the products which are raced bear such a close resemblance to those which can be bought by the public, as do those of Aston Martin, only the most biased can deny the value of racing in improving the breed. It should be no surprise (that the DB4) should be based on an engine which first appeared in experimental form in some of last year’s races.’ – The Autocar, 3rd October 1958

At its launch in October 1958, the DB4 was the first Aston Martin to carry Carrozzeria Touring’s ‘Superleggera’ bodywork, in which light alloy panels were fixed to a framework of light-gauge steel tubes welded to a platform chassis.

Although styled by Touring, the DB4’s gorgeous fastback coachwork was built under license at Newport Pagnell by Aston Martin, which employed some of the finest panel beaters in the industry.

The new engine was a rugged, alloy, 3,670-cc DOHC six-cylinder fitted with twin SU HD8 carburettors and capable of producing approximately 240 bhp at 5,500 rpm.

Thanks to a maximum speed of 140 mph and a dash to 60 mph in under nine seconds, the DB4 was immediately one of the fastest cars on the market.

Over a five-year production run the DB4’s design was continually developed both cosmetically and mechanically. The early DB4s, are distinguishable by the back-hinged bonnet and lack of window frames or bumper over-riders.

These very early cars are considered the most beautiful and original of the series.

ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE

This extremely rare and original Left-Hand Drive example is one of 73 Original Left Hand Drive examples and one of approximately 149 first series cars.

This early Aston Martin DB4 was delivered new to Mr Wertheimer in Washington, D.C.

The DB 4 is presented in the attractive and classically beautiful colour combination of California Sage Green over Olive Green leather with light green carpeting.

While the car spent its early life on the West Coast, it would come to live on both coasts, subsequently being registered in Connecticut and New Jersey, and also being a part of a well-known collection in California, before being sold to a large European collection.

In 2007 the car was believed to have covered only 26,000 miles from new.

CONDITION EXTERIOR

This Aston Martin DB4 is in a beautiful condition. We can best describe this example as a very correct, honest and not over restored example.

The paint of the car has beautiful deep shine. The fittings of the doors, bonnet and boot are excellent. All glasses and lenses are in a nice condition.

The chrome is in the same period correct condition. Extremely beautiful but not more shiny then new. One can find some very minor / light polishing scratches in the bumpers for example.

Due to the attractive color which is named California sage, the car is a very attractive appearance. The color speaks as we sometimes say. It’s a very nice color and one would like to touch the car.

CONDITION INTERIOR

The interior of the Aston is in the same condition as the exterior. Beautiful but not overdone.

The restoration of the interior has been done carefully with the use of period correct materials.

The interior is presented in the attractive and classically beautiful colour combination of California Sage Green over Olive Green leather with light green carpeting.

The condition of the seats are excellent with beautiful leather. The carpets are in the same nice condition.

The dashboard is fully original and in its original color.

The headlining is also period correct restored.

All meters such as the oil pressure, oil temperature, amperage, fuel level, and coolant temperature meters are in perfect working condition.

DRIVING EXPERIENCE

Driving an Aston Martin DB 4 is extremely special. The response on the street is fantastic. It seems as everybody becomes a classic car enthusiast as many people show their enthusiasm about the car. This is not strange because the looks of the DB4 are so fabulous.

For the continent it is off-course a huge advantage that this Aston is a left hand drive example. But amongst this advantage, the amount of left hand drive cars made by Aston Martin is rather low which results in a huge demand for these cars.

This early Series I, in its purest form, with the desirable frameless doors and lack of bumper over-riders, along with rear-hinged bonnet, is considered by many to be the most beautiful of the DB4 range with its’ egg-crate front grille, larger bonnet scoop, and straight cathedral taillights, all part of the original Touring of Milan design.
