At the end of the 1950s, Ferrari's finances were weighed down by the expensive Scuderia. The sale of passenger cars is no longer enough and the Commendatore decides to widen the range downwards to reach a wider clientele. In 1958, Ferrari designed the "Tipo 854", a four-cylinder aluminum 850 cc, then 1032 cc developing 91 hp. The design of a tubular chassis inspired by the Ferrai 250 was entrusted to Bizzarrini and the bodywork was entrusted to Bertone. The aim is to design a small, light and aerodynamic car capable of competing with the increasingly successful Alfa Romeos and other Abarth. Giugiaro, then delivers a typical Italian design, with round lights and a receding tail. The first prototype was assembled in 1961 and completed for the Turin Motor Show where the car was presented on the Bertone stand. Enzo ultimately decides not to produce the car for fear of damaging Ferrari's image. However, the investment being significant and the model almost marketable, he looked for a buyer. Niccolo de Nora interested in the project to create the company ASA (Autocostruzioni Societa per Azioni) in early 1962 and acquires the rights to the small car in the process. Ferrari will manufacture the chassis and mechanics, Bertone the bodywork and ASA will take care of the marketing. ASA made its debut at the 1962 Turin Motor Show by presenting the 1000 GT. The car has in the meantime been modified, the front end swaps its bubble optics and any connection with Ferrari is ignored. It was only in 1964 that the first ASA 1000GT was produced, the assembly was finally entrusted to Ellena in Turin. Due to a too high selling price and a very long delivery time, the little GT is struggling to find her audience. ASA ceased its activity in 1967. In the end, around a hundred copies were produced.
The ASA we are presenting was first registered on May 30, 1966 in Barcelona. It has the particularity of being equipped with an 1100 cc engine, which makes it an even rarer example as only 5 cars are said to have been produced. In 1988 the car was purchased by a Dutchman who undertook a complete restoration which was to be completed in 2001. An important photo file detailing all the stages of the restoration would be provided to the purchaser. Our 1100 GT is now in a very good state of preservation. Both rare, efficient and stylish, the little "Ferrarina" is worthy of the greatest GTs of the 1960s. With its exceptional pedigree, it is now enjoying a well-deserved resurgence of interest among collectors.
