"Zagato's new SZ (Sprint Zagato), or ES30 (Experimental Sportscar 3.0 litre) was nicknamed 'Il Mostro' (The Monster). From its first sketch to its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989 only took 19 months. Designed by Walter de Silva, who was later to design Alfa Romeo's very successful 156, the SZ was based upon the Alfa Romeo 75 3.0 litre chassis. Walter worked in conjunction with Zagato and came up with this aggressive and brutal design, resulting in the 'Il Mostro' as offered today.
The structure is clothed with a composite body with an aluminium roof section resulting in a lightweight but strong design. The prototype spent many hours in Fiat's wind tunnel, and the engineers did an incredible job getting the front profile design's drag factor down to 0.30 while still managing to create down force; especially challenging as the car is shaped like an aircraft wing. The SZ has few driver aids, not even ABS, which results in a real driver's car. At speed the car settles on the road and you can easily cross continents whilst keeping the occupants in comfort. The SZ has an incredible cornering ability that makes it really special, a factor assisted by its near 50-50 weight distribution over both axles. 
No. 421 was supplied new to the UK and first registered to a Mr. Andy Hughes with the rare optioned ‘050’ MPH speedometer. This incredible SZ, like all the SZ’s, is left hand drive and presents well in red with beige leather interior. Having spent the last few years as part of a private collection, the vendor is only selling to make way for a new acquisition. The history file shows MoT test certificates going back as far as 2004 and service history more recently carried out by W.A.D. Alfa Romeo of Wolverhampton and Ayliff Classics Racing and Restoration of Bourne, Lincolnshire, all showing the car has been well maintained and cared for. The car is reported to run and drive very well and certainly turns heads wherever it goes.
Supplied with a V5C registration document, MoT test certificates and service invoices, these increasingly rare and much sought after pieces of Zagato history are becoming ever more collectable, with most cars being later imports from Europe.
