1963 ALFA ROMEO GIULIETTA SPRINT ZAGATO « CODA TRONCA » (SZ2)

French title
Chassis n° AR 10-126.00203
Engine n° 00120AR00120-00623

• Very rare SZ "Coda tronca" with continuous history
• Equipped with a 1600cc and supplied with original 1300cc engine
• Restored and competitive car

To fully exploit the potential of the Giulietta Sprint Veloce, having won the GT class in the Mille Miglia, Alfa Romeo introduced versions with more aerodynamic and lightweight bodies. The Sprint Speciale by Bertone and the Sprint Zagato appeared, built on the platform of the short wheelbase Spider. They were equipped with the 4-cylinder twin-cam 1.3-litre Alfa engine. The SZ was given an ultra-lightweight aluminium body. It weighed 790 km and had a top speed of 200 km/h which was an impressive performance for this sporty coupé with excellent handling. It was a car able to compete both in rallies and on the track. Two series of the SZ were built between 1959 and 1962. The Sprint Zagato is a rare car, given chassis numbers 001 to 217.
The SZ2, the model on offer, has a wider, more aerodynamic body that is truncated at the rear (hence the name "coda tronca"). It is also the rarest, with just 44 examples produced.
A copy of its original Italian certificato di proprietà, and the Italian Car Register, confirm that the car presented was delivered new in Italy on 2 April 1963 to its first owner, Mr C. in La Spezia. It immediately took part in the Italian Championship and participated in numerous races in Italy. A copy of the Automobile Club de Florence shows us that it entered the Coppa Della Consuma on 2 June 1963. The car then passed into the hands of various Italian owners, all listed in the copy of the certificato di proprietà. In 2000, this superb SZ2 underwent a thorough restoration, overseen by Federico Buratti. In 2010, the car was bought by an Italian dealer who sold it directly to the current owner. It was then prepared by Gipimotors in Brussels and was given FIA papers to take part in races organised by Patrick Peter. It is fitted with a 1600cc Alfa engine and will be delivered with its original 1300cc engine as well. In addition, there are various spare parts that will be passed on to the new owner, including shock absorbers, exhaust, wheels...
Very competitive, with outstanding handling and an exceptional top speed, this SZ2 represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of the 44 examples of this coachbuilt Berlinetta. And not just any coachbuilder – none other than Zagato.
