Description

An original Dutch Alfa Romeo Montreal and still in almost unrestored condition is very rare. It is certain that they are almost nonexistent, but we can still offer one. A 1974 model, a magnificent bronze metallic color, with a perfect cognac-colored cloth interior and fully documented.

The Montreal was delivered by the first Alfa Romeo dealer in the Netherlands, Maasland from Voorburg, and the only three owners so far all lived in and around the capital city of the Netherlands, The Hague. A lawyer was the first owner, then a customer of him, and from 2016 until recently, the beautiful wooden steering wheel was regularly turned by another real Alfist. It is also good to know that the maintenance was done for many years by the same mechanic although he worked at two Alfa Romeo workshops, the car moved with him..

The documentation that comes with this Montreal is very extensive: invoices, books, brochures and instruction booklet: everything is present and original. The last owner is a true enthusiast who nevertheless put a large part of his Italian collection on sale. We already found a new owners for these cars, but the owner had his doubts about selling the Montreal much more than the other cars. The fact is that once sold, as an owner he knew for sure he won’t never own again a Montreal in this condition and with such a local history. And of course it takes quite some time to make such an emotional decision. But finally he made his decision, mainly because we could provide the owner with a beautiful pre-war and he therefore had to make room in his “Alfa Romeo man cave”.

Extensive driving with the long undervalued Alfa quickly confirms why the popularity has increased considerably in recent years. It is not a super sporty car, but one with a beautiful mix between sportiness and comfort. Wonderful steering, good drivers position, perfectly shifting “dog leg” 5 speed gearbox and the engine is of course a real legend. The more than 2.5 liter V8 from the famous Tipo 33 (of which we have one for sale!), in a version modified for daily use, was placed in the front of the Montreal and gives the car the performance you would expect from a Italian sports car with this styling.

All the years in the Netherlands the car had a good life. The Montreal is always neat and not too much driven and perfectly maintained. And that can still be seen and felt these days. The test of time has barely shows its marks on the car. The biggest bodywork intervention was a completely new paint job in 2016. The maintenance was only done by specialists and all invoices are included in the extensive documentation. Major maintenance was recently carried out, including renewing of: brake calipers, battery, exhaust system, gearbox support, wheel bearing. The injection cold start controller was also replaced and the Spica injection system adjusted. The connoisseur therefore knows immediately that who can do this is a very good mechanic with knowledge of classic Alfa Romeo’s.

The drive to our showroom Rijssen made the owner still hesitant to keep the car … That says enough about the passion which the Alfa has been blessed with for years. Do you recognize this passion and would you like to see yourself as the next owner of this Italian piece of art? You are most welcome to come over and we are happy to show and demonstrate you this sublime Alfa Romeo Montreal.

History:
In the sixties of the twentieth century Canadians asked Alfa Romeo to design a car for the future to show at the 1967 world exhibition. In cooperation with Bertone Alfa Romeo decided to accept the challenge.
The car presented at the 1967 world exhibition, which was held in Montreal, was based on the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 racing car and was designed with a rear mounted V8 engine.
In the year 1970 the show car became reality but now the engine was front mounted. The car was named Alfa Romeo “Montreal” after the capital city of Canada. The Alfa Romeo Montreal is powered by a slightly detuned Tipo 33 V8 engine. This beautiful engine is made of aluminium, is fitted with double overhead camshafts (DOHC), dry sump oil system and petrol injection.
All other mechanics are as to be expected from Alfa Romeo in the late sixties and early seventies of the twentieth century: 5-speed floor shift gearbox, coil springs all round, independent front suspension, limited slip differential and disc brakes all round.
The Alfa Romeo Montreal was built until the year 1977, 3925 cars were built in seven years time.
The Alfa Romeo Montreal drives comfortable/ sportive and is very well suited to drive long distances; a real GT. The engine sounds incredible, also inside the cabin. The dashboard design combined with the view over the bonnet is exquisite.
